Some attractions you should not miss in Bilbao

The Guggenheim Museum

One of the most famous contemporary art museums in all of Spain. Opened in 1997, it is characteristic not only for its collection, but for its architecture designed by Canadian Frank Gehry.

Every year, more than one million people visit the Guggenheim Museum, helping to boost the economy of the city and tourism in the Basque Country. Its building, built on curvilinear forms that are covered with limestone and titanium sheets, has an area of 24,000 m² and 19 galleries.

La Plaza Nueva

In the center of the old town of Bilbao is a pass, and the Plaza Nueva (Berria), built in the 19th century, is one of the most important places to see in Bilbao in one day.

With a neoclassical style, it has a rectangular shape and 18 semicircular arches with attached Doric columns. Few of the best places to eat pintxos and to try the local gastronomy are found in this square.

Arriaga Theater

The Arriaga Theater is a beautiful Neo-Baroque building from the end of the 19th century dedicated to «Spanish Mozart«, the Bilbao composer Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga. For its construction, the architect Joaquín Rucoba used the Paris Opera as inspiration.

Probably one of the most beautiful theaters we have in Spain, the Arriaga theater has suffered a lot, and has had to be rebuilt several times. First, after a fire in 1914, and later due to the floods that took the city in 1983.

La Ribera Market

In the old town, next to the estuary, we find the La Ribera Market, one of the most important tourist spots to visit in Bilbao.

To talk about the La Ribera Market, we have to go back several centuries, specifically until the XIV, despite the fact that the building we see today was inaugurated in 1929.

In 1990, the Mercado de la Ribera was recognized by Guiness as the most complete Municipal Supply Market, being the largest covered market in all of Europe.

He is famous not only for his gastronomic offer, but for his live jazz and swing sessions, usually on Sundays.

The Alhondiga

Officially called Azkuna Zentroa, although people usually call it as their name «of a lifetime»: Alhóndiga. It is an old wine store that has become a beautiful cultural center, worth visiting.

15,000 square meters for leisure in its widest sense. It welcomes visitors and brings together the different spaces called the «Atrium of Cultures», a large covered square adorned with 43 columns of different architectural and material styles. From it it is visible the transparent pool located on the roof: the so-called «Terrace of the Sun», another of the privileged spaces of the building.

San Mamés Stadium

For soccer lovers San Mamés is a temple with the Mecca where you should go at least once in a lifetime. Bilbao football, team and culture philosophy, the preciousness of the «new» stadium.

Here the Athletic Club of soccer plays and often it also hosts concerts of music of enormous capacity. The football field has +50,000 seats and Category 4 of stadium rank (modern enough, large, and safe enough to host Europa League (UEFA) and Eurocup finals.

Zubizuri Bridge

The Zubizuri is a pedestrian bridge that crosses the Nervion estuary joining the two city margins. Its structure is arched, white, and the truth is that it has a beautiful aesthetic that resembles a boat.

Basilica of Begoña

The Basilica of Begoña was built at the beginning of the 16th century in the place where the Virgin appeared. It has characteristics of the Gothic style, despite its mix of various trends. The Virgin of Begoña is the patron saint of Bizkaia (the region).
