San Sebastián has an ideal location for day trips, both to large cities (such as Bilbao -100km-, Vitoria -100km- and Pamplona -80km-) and to other smaller towns.
Personally we do not recommend visiting the big cities because they surely deserve more than a day trip (though it can be a good option if you don’t have much time). We specially recommend excursions to villages, more or less unknown, close to San Sebastian but with a lot of charm.
If you only choose to visit one village in the Basque Country, this is probably the one. One of the most beautiful towns in the Basque Country and a real must-see! Hondarribia (Fuenterrabía in Spanish) is a colorful fishing village that is both rich in architecture as well as in gastronomy. It’s a feast for the eyes and also for the stomach. Book here your day trip tour from San Sebastian to Hondarribia.
Hondarribia, San Pedro & San Juan can be visited the same day booking a guided daytrip from San Sebastian. Not at all a bad option if you don’t wanna loss time and money.
Maritime architecture & colorful houses. Most of the buildings in San Pedro & San Juan are located around a single street that runs along the eastern shore of the bay and, sometimes, passes under the houses, through several passages. This unique urban center houses numerous buildings of great architectural and historical interes (like for example the house where the French writer Victor Hugo lived)
Getaria is a charming fishing village. It is wedged between two beautiful beaches and also has a little islet that makes it for a nice hike.
The small town of Zarautz is mainly known for its 2.5 km long beach. This massive stretch of sand, known as “the queen of the beaches,” has been attracting beachgoers since the 19th century when Queen Isabella II of Spain chose Zarautz as her summer getaway destination.
Visit both places easily booking a guided day trip here.
Known for its famous beaches, therapeutic water and a thriving surf scene, Biarritz offers visitors a unique atmosphere. This is a place were posh restaurants and spas live harmoniously side-by-side with laid-back pizza joints and surf shops.
Although Saint Jean de Luz is located a mere 20 minutes away from Biarritz and both are famous beach resorts, the atmosphere in St Jean de Luz is completely different, somehow more relaxed. It is busy but not overcrowded, beautiful but not overly luxurious.
There are large beautiful Basque houses that form the old part of the town. Many of the buildings date back to the 17th century, a time when Saint Jean de Luz was one of the most important fishing ports of France. Book here your day trip to Biarritz & Saint Jean de Luz.
