Lavapies is a neighbourhood with an extremely diverse history, linked to working class, immigrant and counterculture movements. As a result, more than 80 different nationalities are represented in this neighbourhood today.
Lavapiés is one of Madrid’s most artistic neighborhoods with small and independent theaters, alternative cultural centers, traditional stores and walls decorated with colorful street art. Lavapiés is close to all the main attractions of the city, but is not itself touristy. Lavapiés is a mixture of old and new, of tradition and avant-garde, all in an intimate, village setting.
